These are some ideas for a t-shirt for our Student Union Board, which I'm on. We are Dinkins Student Union, or DSU: The Entertainment Crew. So we thought it would be cool to try to dress up our name with famous logos! These are MTV and Disney, if you couldn't tell.

Art!
Hey Hey,
This is a pic of my first 2-D project, which I got a 97 on today. The professor decided to keep it to show others and possibly to go in a show. I was relieved to get an A, because most grades were less than B. Anyway - this project involved breaking down symmetry. Clockwise, you have Symmetry, Near Symmetry, Random, and Asymmetry. More art stuff later.

Punk meets Old-Time
This evening I got to jam with some folks. First, my buddy Bryan who I met in the summer. He is a music major, and a killer jazz guitarist (also Almann Bros) He was very interested in my music, as I was with his - man he could tear it up. Then, I played with the mohawk guy thats always playing in the lobby. We had a really good time. I played along with some of his rock stuff, and then he gave a really powerful twist on some old-time tunes. We drew a bit of a crowd. One brother started freestyle rapping to a rocking powerchord version of cripple creek. Talk about diversity - Bluegrass/Rock/Rap. Good times.
Hi,
Today, I went to church at FBC. Chris went with me. After that I went to the car wash (long overdue) I ate some lunch in my room and got the banjos all packed up. This afternoon I met the members of the Living History group I'm going to be a part of, its called Voices From The Past. This group travels to different museums, iplantations, and villages - acting out the parts of African-Americans during the 1800s. My interest in history, and the banjo with its connections with black culture, is why I'm going to be a part of it. They were wonderful people, very kind and excited to have me. We talked about upcoming events and we're all looking forward to spending more time with each other. I am by far the youngest (next up is about 15 years older than me) and right now I'm the only white dude in the crowd. Who cares.
Last night we had a Rasta Reggae band perform. I got to meet them and spend some time with the members. They were awesome poeple and great musicians. I even got to talk with the lead singer about Jamaican banjo playing styles. It was a very interesting experience.

Trilogy
Hey hey,
Well, I did it. Yep, made the late night run with some friends to be some of the first to get star wars on dvd. I know, I know - call me a nerd - but I've only got like 2 more chances to be star wars nerdy - cause the last movie is coming out in May. I will be at the theater at midnight for sure. Anyway, just thought someone should know.

Project is Done!
Hi Folks,
This weekend was most productive. Friday, we were expecting a very rainy weekend. As always, the Lord provides... Sunny the whole time - allowing me to finish my community service leadership project required for Eagle Scout rank. Saturday, there were 6 guys to help - and it took 6 hours to do what we had left to do. We put it together, painted, dug holes, and put it in the ground. Oh yeah - the structure is an information center for our square. I worked with Jenny from Main St. Laurens USA. (mainstreetlaurens.org) Anyway, it all went well and we got it finished up.
After all of that, I had a relaxing visit with Barbara & Jim (ok, and the poodle, who never tires) We played old tunes and talked about all kinds of things. Always great to visit friends.
Sunday, It was church and then a birthday party for Nanny. We all went to her new house for a great afternoon. We had burgers and homemade ice cream. Everyone enjoyed playing with the baby, and there was lots of music - Nanny on dulcimer and piano, Owen with bass, Sue with fiddle, Dad with guitar, Hunter with dobro and 12-string, different folks with the washboard, me with the banjo. Its so awesome to be in a musical family.
I made it back to school about 8:30.

Greetings. Monday was fairly uneventful. Classes and homework. Yesterday was fun. I got a call mid-day from the University's Student Union Board. They told me I had been hired to be on it. I will help promote campus activities in different ways such as making posters. They also told me that I will start getting a paycheck next semester. We had a clubs & organizations fair last night, and then we went for supper at a nice restaurant, which they paid for. I got in fairly late and finished up homework. Today, I had 3-D, writing, and art history. My 3D teacher really liked what I was working, and showed it to the rest of the class - She said "It's finished, if you mess it up I'll cry." It's 3 paper boxes and some other folded paper hot glued together, still looks odd to me. We got to read our papers in writing class - I wrote on the Pioneer Day from the weekend. I got my first test back in art history - high A. So things are going well.

Musical Weekend!
Hello All,
Saturday marked 3 years since the day evil struck our heartland hard. This weekend our country remembered those who suffered death because of hatred. There were many memorial services all over the country Saturday - but our biggest tribute of was continuing to do the things we love to do. Those who try to fill free poeple's live with fear and terror are shown every day that We will not bow to their wishes. This country was founded on Hope - and terror has no place here.
This weekend, I went home again. Friday, I worked with Dad some more on the Eagle project, and then went to eat with friends. After this, we all went to the game. After the game, I went home for a little while to finish some things up before going to Hunter's to spend the night. We checked out the mac, talked, watched some TV, and just stayed up too late.
Saturday morning, Hunter took me home, where I got ready for some scouts to come over. The guys showed up around 8:30 and we started working on the project. We finished up what we had to do about 11:00, and I took them home.
I went straight to Pioneer Day next. It is an annual event held in Owings, where reenactors and craftsmen come and show off their stuff. I was so glad to see lots of my friends there. I got to jam a bit with Hunter, Mark, and David - playing 1800s music. Renee showed all of us her new cotton blossom engagement ring that David made. He also gave me something he made - a Gut String Gourd Banjar (the kind of banjo that slaves would have played) I was very thrilled, and I'm enjoying playing it.
After the History Fest, Sue, Hunter, Kari, and I went to a bluegrass jam in Hicory Tavern. We had some chicken and listened to some REALLY talented young musicians from around the upstate. We played outside with some of the folks before we left.
Then, we went to a Double B-day party of some friends from Beach Camp and Mission Trip, Mary and Trisha. For the third time that day, we jammed with other guitar, fiddle, and banjo players. It was just like our summer trips. Mary led us in a rousing rendition of the Old-time/Bluegrass favorite Cripple Creek, or as Jimmy says "Crizzipple" We had a great time, and then went back to Hunter's. After watching SNL, we retired.
Sunday afternoon I played with Hunter and Sue - with her new fiddle. We figured out and played several good tunes and I had a lot of fun.
Later Sunday I went home, packed up my things, and headed back for school. What a great weekend!

TWISTER
OK, so like, right after I posted the last one, this siren starts blasting. So I turn on the tellie, and there's a flippin tornado. So the excited little Residence Hall man comes screaming, "Go to the Basement! ah!!!" So, we got to sit in the basement for 45 minutes. We got out at 12:15, my class started at 12:30. The weather kept me from my lunch. As if that was not enough, Frances then decided that I did not deserve to be dry. So, on the cross-campus tour to the art building, she helped me discover the true meaning of "soaked." I got to class just on time, and got to be wet all day - including the inside of my shoes. Aren't hurricanes great?
Howdy. Well, This weekend I went home. I started by dropping off a friend in Mauldin. When I got home, I loaded my Adobe Graphics Software onto the powerbook. I took Olivia to a birthday party and then went to Nanny's. We looked at everything on the computer and visited for a while. Then, I went to El Jalisco with the Crew from church. After eating, Daniel rode with me to the football game, where I saw lots of people who I havent seen in a long time. The 5th Quarter at church was next.
Saturday I got up and started working with Dad on the Eagle Scout project. We got a lot done, and the next two weekends I'm going back to get it finished. At lunch time we went to town to pick up some things, and I was able to see some folks at the Artists Coop. Saturday night we barbequed some ribs with family over.
Sunday, I went to church and then went home. After lunch Dad and I did some more work and I got back to school late Sunday night.
Yesterday, some gals from home (Jenna, Leigh, Erin, Brandi) came to visit the college. Our schedules did not allow an extended visit - but it was long enough for Jenna's mom to give me some homemade chex mix - woohoo! Last night, around 11:30PM, my dorm hall had a fire drill. That means go outside. No elevator. 8th floor. It was fairly chaotic, but it didn't last long.
I've just gotten back from my first class. I'm working on some stuff, then I'm eating lunch with Bre and I'll be in classes from12:30 until 6:30.

winthrop football rocks!
Hello All. Friday. Woo hoo. I just got back from my only Friday class, and now I'm getting everything packed up to go home. I'm taking a friend home to Greenville, and then going to mi casa, where the Adobe graphics software we ordered is waiting. My plans are to spend some time with Nanny, Spend some time with friends, Go to the football game, Visit Papa & Grandmother, work on my scout project, eat ribs with family, and Go to church. Maybe I'll get it all done. Somehow, I'm very excited about the football game, a sport in which I have NO interest. I suppose its just the atmosphere. (Oh yeah, as for the title, Winthrop has no football - but we do have cool football shirts that proudly read : "Still Undefeated" a true statement)

Musical Soup Nazis playing Mandolin in Tiny Boxes
Did lots today. First major event was lunch with a Governor's School pal. 3D design class followed, where I made many tiny paper boxes. In writing class, we examined an essay about the infamous "Soup Nazi" who was featured on an episode of Seinfeld. My writing professor is a really great guy. He is very goofy and gets excited about a lot. I'd say he's in his 50s, and he likes all kind of cool things. Like, he was wearing a Beatles tie today. He likes going to the mountains, flyfishing, and.....PLAYS THE MANDOLIN. We talked after class and he wants to get together and jam sometime -COOL! Anyway, tonight I had some chicken and went to a little get-together the residence hall threw for us. Now, I'm typing on this super-cool powerbook. (!). Last night I discovered that because our internet is on this network, I can share music with other mac itunes users. So this guy's playlist of over 1700 songs showed up - and its all good music! So cool. So now I have a whole other library of music I can check out. Negative side is, I can't do anything but listen to it - can't put it on CDs or Ipod. Oh well.

titles are hard to make up
I'm having immense fun at the University. Today, I was in art class for six hours(2 classes back-to-back) I really do like it. When you must stand and draw for three hours, it can get to be tiring, especially when the subject and style of drawing is difficult. But there is a point when the frustration turns into something really cool - learning. Corny, but true. After a good full day of class, several of us went to the cafeteria, ate & talked until it closed. Woah - how have I not talked about my computer? It is most cool. Everything looks better on a mac - its like having a really nice frame with a painting. It does so many cool things - and soon I'll have THE Adobe Creative Suite - which will allow me to make millions of wonderful designs. Woo-hoo! I'm very blessed to have parents and grandparents who give so much to make sure I am outfitted to do my best. Have a lovely day, or night.

m o n d a y . . .
greetings. Today I have talked to family & friends at home and gone to classes. This weekend was fairly eventful, although this school really clears out on the weekend - leaving mostly the really loud kids who hate being at home. Anyway, Saturday there was a comedian and African step dance group. Sunday morning, I went to the local First Baptist with my two art major church pals. I liked it a lot - not a typical Baptist church - very contemporary. Afterwards we went to Taco Bell and had muchos tacos y chalupas. Last night there was a singer and another comedian. Good times.

Hypnotic Bonepony Bluegrass Banjo Brothers
Woo-hoo. I just got back from one of the best concerts! The university has been bringing in performers all week, and tonight they gave us a double feature - two foot stompin' "newgrass" groups who sort of mixed Rock&Roll with Bluegrass, Country, and anyways...it was great. The bands were Bonepony and The Avett Brothers. Man were they great. Ok, ok, maybe I got excited because there were banjos on stage. I had one short class today. After that, I spent most of the afternoon studying and rearranging my dorm room. No roomate ever showed up, so I made the room into an ideal living space/ art work area. Yesterday(Thursday), I had three classes, two of which were 3 hour studio classes. Also, we had a hypnotist on stage last night. He made people do all kinds of crazy things. It was wonderfully hilarious. Well, those are the highlights.

books, lines, traffic, classes
Greetings,
It is Wednesday. Last night after classes, I went home to get my new mac powerbook. We spent some time setting it up and figuring things out. It is shiny and wonderful, and I'm excited about all of the things I'll be able to do with it, especially art stuff. I had a home cooked meal and went to bed late. This morning I drove back to school, and had some lunch, then I went to 3-D design class. After this I drove to Michael's (Art&Craft) where a very nice lady helped me quickly find everything I needed for my art classes. At Best Buy I picked up an ethernet cable for the dorm room. Traffic was enough to frighten a Nascar driver. Upon my return to the University, I hastily traveled to my writing class, after which I experienced my first Art History class. Then, I went to the bookstore and purchased three textbooks(The others I'm buying from a friend) The lines were outrageous - as well as the prices. You could buy like a horse for the price of USED books for a semester. Finally, I spanned the campus from the freshman parking lot to the dorm, and now I'm in my room. Busy day. There is so much to do, so much to learn, little time to do it, its nerve-racking, tiring, and energizing at the same time. It's a blast.

Convocation Day
Well, College is very nice. I'm meeting lots of folks, and there's lots to do. We've had great concerts each night, including folk singers and a jazz group. On Sunday, I went to church with a couple of other art majors, nice people there. Today, we had convocation. All of the faculty and freshman class assembled, heard speeches, sang the alma mater, and marched in a line across campus. After that we had a picnic. I've stopped into the computer lab on my way back to the dorm from a meeting of the Ebonite Black Gospel Choir. I'm considering joining, or at least making a few t-shirt designs. Anyway, class starts tommorow. I'm excited about meeting my art professors. Until next time....

El Universidad
Well, I moved to college yesterday. Yep, Livin large. I have no roomate -which means either he's an upperclassman coming in a few days..or I don't have one. My dorm is all decked out with posters and things. I even have the painting Mark did of a hillbilly banjo man hanging up. Will report more soon. Peace.
